Three pigeon-racing rivals shot dead in dispute

A man has shot dead three people in a dispute with rival pigeon racers in Portugal.

The four men were waiting in the city of Setubal, south of Lisbon, for their pigeons to return after a race but they were also arguing about an illegal vegetable garden.

Portuguese daily newspaper Correio da Manha said that one, an unemployed 60-year-old, shot the other three, before turning the gun on himself as police arrived.

The victims were aged 47 and 65, while the age of the third has not been made public.

Andreia Goncalves, police commissioner in Setubal, described the deaths as “an isolated situation” related to an unresolved issue between the men.

Portugal has restrictive gun laws but firearms are legal for hunting.
