Person dies at airport after becoming trapped in running plane engine

A person has died at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam after becoming trapped in a running aircraft engine, according to police.

The Dutch airline KLM said the aircraft was bound for Billund in Denmark, carrying passengers on flight KL1341.

In a statement, the company said: “We are currently taking care of the passengers and employees who witnessed the incident at Schiphol.”

KLM added that “the circumstances are currently under investigation”.

Dutch media reported that the aircraft was due to take off when the person was killed.

The Royal Military Police investigation has not yet identified who the person was, a spokesperson said.

The spokesperson added that it was too early to say whether this was an “incident”, or a form of suicide.

He also added that all passengers and crew, many of whom witnessed the incident, had safely left the plane.

Posting on X, Schiphol Airport described the incident as “horrible” and said: “Our thoughts go out to the relatives and we care for the passengers and colleagues who witnessed this.

The flight to Billund, scheduled for 2.25pm, departed at 2.59pm, according to Schiphol’s website.

Last year, a Texas airport worker died after being “ingested” into an engine at San Antonio International Airport.
