Mum in coma after Turkish airport collapse ‘losing thousands every day’ in medical fees

The friends of a mother from the Wirral whose heart stopped when she collapsed at an airport in Turkey are raising money to get her back home.

Friends and family of Melissa Kinsella, from Merseyside, said she is now in a coma and claim the Turkish hospital treating her is charging her nearly £2,000 for every day she spends in their care.

She was on her way home from a family holiday in Turkey when she suffered a seizure and stopped breathing, a GoFundMe page set up for her says.

Rebecca Dath, who has set up the fundraiser, added Ms Kinsella is now in a coma, with the hospital charging £1,800 a day for her care.

Ms Kinsella, who has three children, did not have insurance covering medical care while she way away.

Friends are aiming to fund an air ambulance for Ms Kinsella, to get her back to the UK.

Writing on Facebook, Ms Dath said: “Thank you so so so much everyone, there’s no update on Missy, but what we do know is an air ambulance to get her back to the UK is £42,000.

More on Merseyside

“We need her in a UK hospital as soon as she’s well enough… GoFundMe take their fees as well, so I have been asked to raise the… limit to cover an air ambulance and the £1,800 a day in the hospital.

“Please please share and give what you can.”

So far, more than £36,000 has been raised for Ms Kinsella’s care.

A spokesperson from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said: “We are supporting the family of a British national who is in hospital in Turkey, and are in contact with local authorities.”

Ms Kinsella’s local MP Angela Eagle said she has been speaking to the FCDO and the British consulate in Turkey on the family’s behalf, “to ensure all is being done to help the family get Melissa the best care, and bring her home to the UK as soon as possible”.

It comes a month after a British woman died in Turkey after travelling there for gastric band surgery.
